Four Videos • Four Areas of Focus

In this comprehensive course, Luis Colan offers everything that an artist interested in pen and ink techniques is searching for

  • Video 1—This video offers a discussion of artistic Influences on the instructor, the essential materials for pen and ink drawing— including the differences in pens—ball point pens, gel pens, etc.— the lightfastness of inks,  paper and some technical demonstrations of pen work. Colan offers a look inside of his sketchbooks.

  • Video 2—This video features more demonstrations by the instructor of pen and ink techniques. A discussion of how to get a sense of volume and depth using line and tone to create contrast: hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling to create texture. How to control your materials in consideration of weather variables. A discussion of oil based and water-soluble inks. A discussion of other artists who work in pen and ink.

  • Video 3— In this video, Colan focuses on the use of the ball point pen, which offers the artist many advantages. Colan offers some basic exercises to get accustomed to the ball point pen, in achieving many variations in tonal range. Lychee pen offers a finer line, with a deeper black, and this is covered as well.  How to hold the pen to achieve different strokes.

  • Video 4- In this video, Colan demonstrates how to move the pen to create texture, using lines of various types to mimic nature. Blocking in masses of foliage, then drawing the specific details of branches and leaves as needed. Colan teaches artists how to evaluate and refine a drawing, focusing on balance, contrast, a play between light and shadow. How to use negative space—similar to working in monotype— to create focal points in the drawing.

Instructor

Luis Colan (b 1980, Lima, Peru) Graduated from the Hartford Art School in 2004. He continued his education by attending the Art Students League under the instruction of Dan Thompson. He was also one of the first students of the Teaching Studios of Art when it opened in 2009, where he studied with Adam Miller, Bennett Vadnais, and Robert Zeller for several years. Working closely with these artists from both schools has allowed him to refine his ability to depict landscapes and figures. Partaking in numerous events and workshops, including Plein Air workshops in Tuscany in 2013 and 2015 has allowed him to continue to develop his vision as a landscape painter. He has been exhibiting in New York and surrounding areas in several group shows, three solo exhibitions. In 2010, he became a Junior Member at the Salmagundi Club where he was reacquainted with Monotype printing, which has since become an important part of his practice. The process has allowed him to explore and use what he has learned in painting the landscape outdoors to execute images from imagination and memory.
